Pharmacy Technician I

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the supervisor and a licensed Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I prepares, counts, labels, packages, and dispenses pharmaceuticals for Pharmacists approval. The pharmacy technician interacts with the other teams in the pharmacy in an effort to provide accurately dispensed prescriptions on a scheduled basis according to the shipping times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under a pharmacist’s supervision, fills prescription orders
  • Prepares, packages and affixes proper auxiliary labels on a timely basis specifying name of drug, strength, route of administration and quantity
  • Places proper paperwork along with an initialed picking slip and the medication all together for the pharmacist approval
  • Restocks the pharmacy when supplies diminish
  • Ensures that all supplies (i.e. meds, bags, cold packs, vials, etc.) are in proper order prior to starting work
  • Responsible for checking in and putting away the order in its proper place in a timely fashion
  • Responsible for checking, bagging and sealing the drugs with their appropriate paperwork
  • Performs expiration dating review of all medications on a scheduled basis or at each restocking period and provide a list of expired medications
  • Maintains all related records, logs, and any other related files as determined by the pharmacy management
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the specific pharmacy area/functions hired to work in as well as cross training in other areas throughout the pharmacy as indicated by management
  • Courteously assists all customers, internal and external

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs technician assignments for the day or by special assignment as requested by pharmacy management
  • Maintains a neat, clean and organized work place at all times
  • Assists, as needed, in keeping pharmacy clean and well organized (e.g., trash, removal, daily cleaning, etc.)
  • Maintains scheduling flexibility to ensure availability to meet the needs of the department for all hours of operation
  • Follows all Medicare, Medicaid and Private Insurance regulations and requirements
  • Actively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement
  • Demonstrates thoroughness with all work related activities; strives to continually improve quality and productivity results displayed by Pharmacy personnel on an ongoing basis
  • Abides by all policies, procedures, and protocols set forth in the departmental, CCS Medical Personnel and Administrative Policy Manuals

Position Accountability

Cost Control: Responsible for ensuring the prescription fill process is accurate
Quality Control: Ensures that company philosophies, policies, and procedures regarding patients, government agencies, and other vendors are maintained
Customer Service: Ensures that patient relations are treated with the highest level of customer service, per company policies
Records: Responsible for maintaining accurate patient records
Compliance: Ensures effective documentation and adherence to Medicare and Private insurance guidelines, patients, government agencies, and other vendors are maintained
Confidentiality: Adheres to HIPAA guidelines, company privacy and confidentiality policies
Safety: Direct access to prescription medication, this position must follow all applicable CCS Medical, federal and state regulations

Responsibility

Reports to: Department Supervisor
Supervisory: None

Primary Customers

Internal: Departmental employees, managers, supervisors, and team leads. Supervisors, managers, and employees of other departments
External: Patients, health care providers, and insurance companies regarding general issues and questions

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Certificate from a pharmacy technician program and/or one year of experience in pharmacy
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form

Physical Requirements

Frequent: Standing, walking indoors, use of hands, lifting up to 10 lbs
Occasional: Walking indoors, sitting, reaching, stooping/bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting up to 10 lbs, carrying up to 15 lbs, reaching above, at and below shoulder height

Work Environment

Moderate noise level similar to typical office environment with computers, printers and light traffic.
